Lyric Showdown #1 Either Way by Guster

The Lyrics:

You were almost kind
You were almost true
Don't let me see
That other side of you
You have learned in time
That you must be cruel
I'll have to wait to get the best of you
Poison in everything you say
Don't you, don't you
Wonder what difference does it make
Either way...

You were almost kind
You were almost true
Why give away that other side of you
Happens every time
So it must be true
Step on a kid they'll grow up hating you
Poison in everything you say
Don't you, don't you
Wonder what difference does it make
Either way...

Were you ever kind?
Were you always cruel?
Who's ever seen that other side of you?
Happened every time
So it must be true
Where did you learn its either him or you?

You were almost kind
You were almost true
Don't let me see that other side of you
You have learned in time
That you must be cruel
I'll have to wait to get the best of you
Poison in everything you say
Don't you, don't you
Wonder what difference does it make
Either way...

My two cents:

I will never forget that night at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor. I already liked the band from hearing the Goldfly Album. The concert had been going well, and it had been well worth my money…and then they played this. It was like Ryan was singing right to me. Musically it is amazing and lyrically it cut to my core. I had been hurt so many times that my defenses were up. That is what the song is about to me: someone who ahs been hurt time and time again so they hide behind a wall for protection. If they can't see the real you they can't hurt you…in theory.

"Who's ever seen that other side of you?
Happened every time
So it must be true
Where did you learn its either him or you?"

Those words just about knocked me off my feet. No one had ever captured exactly what I was feeling before. Yes, people do have to wait to get the best of me…and at the time I didn't think I was worth sticking around that long. Sometimes I still have those feelings. No matter how much I have grown, tried to heal and have moved on, those doubts and fears still have their moments. Because of that, this song will always have a very special place in my heart.
