Fourth of July: Woodville, OH vs Sheridan, IN

Small towns tend to be interesting places to celebrate our nation's birthday. Some small towns have the big carnivals and fairs and pretty amazing fireworks shows. My hometown was one of those locations. We had the Fourth of July Festival that culminated with one heck of a fireworks show. We had carnies, townies, lots of beer, and of course fireworks. In a sick sort of way, I miss it. It is like a train wreck I can't help but like to watch. When I was invited to go to celebrate the fourth in Sheridan, IN, I took my friends up on the offer. Our initial game plan was to go to the park for the festivities, watch the fireworks, and then go to our show at the local bar. I was curious to see how Sheridan would rate. I mean it could potentially trump Woodville, but this is what I found. The "festivities": I can't really judge these because the weather on the Fourth sucked. It rained off and on all day, so they apparently called off the activities at the park. What str...

Parakeet Wrangling

I recently went to purchase a new parakeet. I'm not usually all about the pet stores, but we needed a new girl…so it had to be done. I went into the store, and after careful observation (it took forever…of course I would show up at flock nap time. They were all asleep or starting to doze off. That makes it hard to just pick a bird.), I made my decision. After asking the employee some questions…he couldn't answer but a co-worker could he went to fetch the chosen parakeet. As he tried to catch her, another employee was telling me she wasn't tame, and began giving me the new bird owner lecture. I just sort of tuned her out, but I did at least pretend to listen. Pretty soon she decides to help him play fetch the parakeet. Another five-ten minutes go by, and I'm still without a parakeet. Finally, I walk up to the gentleman and ask if I can help. Within seconds I have the chosen parakeet in a towel, and in my hands. I ask the shocked employees for a box and two cuttlebones, p...

Why I do Web design and Blog at Karaoke Shows

I work for a DJ/Karaoke company. I update their web site so sometimes I just have to work at a show doing pictures and video, and if I'm already working why not do a blog or two Um people work in coffee shops that have wi fi, how is a bar different? I need more hours in a day…I've been known to blog from my phone while actually *running* a show to meet a deadline They frown on me blogging and writing at my full time job for very obvious reasons. This is something I need to be doing on my own time. Sometimes writing for hours on end on my couch with moody cockatiels and psychotic parakeets gets a little old. I want to have a little denial that I am a crazy bird lady. Mo's actually has a little room just off the DJ booth where I can work pretty much undisturbed the whole night. I've tried to get the birds to run the home business in my absence, but they are just lazy I seriously get bored way too easily and I start thinking about all the other things I should be doing....

My Summer Top Five

Image
Summer is here! I have a couple months to enjoy the season, and I already have big plans. compare Sheridan's Fourth of July celebration to Woodville's I know the Sheridan townies keep up with the Woodville townies in the Red Onion vs. Jo-Jos contest. Now the question is can they keep up with Fourth of July celebrations. Now, admittedly Woodville has lost a few points since discontinuing the sale of beer by the half gallon milk jug...but it should be interesting to see a how Sheridan rates. Oh yes this will be blog material... Turn 30 I don't want to do this...but since it is going to happen right, wrong, or other wise I might as well enjoy it Lose at least 40 pounds I'm going to Vegas in September...I want to not be self conscious. I'm already down 15...so lets keep hoping. Build my writing business If I want to be working from home full time by next June, I better get on it. enjoy time with my friends Whether it is out a the bar, at so...

I'm saving up for a mini laptop

Image
I want a mini laptop. Yes the little laptops that aren't sure of what they want to be when they grow up. One A110 mini notebook with Debian I have a wonderful lap top. I can't imagine my life without it. Actually, I am typing this at a karaoke show, in between taking photos for the web site, and hanging out in the dj booth. Oh yeah, I can multitask (as I run around the table to get a microphone_)...ok done singing... However, at moments like this, and when I travel, I wish I had something a little smaller to work with. It wouldn't be my main computer, but it would be my on the go computer. It would fit in a purse and more easily in a carry on. I'm actually hoping to bhave one by our Vegas trip so i can more easily blog on the go.

My Guster Field Trip

Image
I wish I had some great "I flew to Europe to see them story," but while the distance is shorter I think my story is pretty cool. I spent my 25th birthday at a Chicago Guster concert. I think it may actually have been my best birthday ever. I'm always on the look out for nearby Guster shows. Of course when I saw that they would be playing in Chicago on my birthday it was a no brainer. I would have to go on my own, but it would be so worth it. I ordered my tickets, booked my train trip, and made reservations at the Hostel in the Loop. It was my first experience with Amtrak, and it wasn't a bad one. We had a few slow moments, but we still made it into Chicago on time. They were able to check me into the hostel early. One weird thing was the assigned your bed and I ended up on the top bunk. This comes into play later. I walked around the neighborhood and ended up getting stuck in the rain. My one pair of shoes (remember I'm staying in a hostel) were sandals with l...

Lyric Showdown 3: Who I Am by Jessica Andrews

The Lyrics: If I live to be a hundred And never see the seven wonders That'll be alright If I don't make it to the big leagues If I never win a Grammy I'm gonna be just fine 'Cause I know exactly who I am I am Rosemary's granddaughter The spitting image of my father And when the day is done My momma's still my biggest fan Sometimes I'm cluless and I'm clumsy But I've got friends that love me And they know just where I stand It's all a part of me And that's who I am So when I make a big mistake When I fall flat on my face I know I'll be alright Should my tender heart be broken I will cry those teardrops knowin' I will be just fine "Cause nothin' changes who I am I am Rosemary's granddaughter The spitting image of my father And when the day is done My momma's still my biggest fan Sometimes I'm cluless and I'm clumsy But I've got friends that love me And they know just where I stand It's all a part of me ...

Old School: Poltergeist the Legacy

I've been recording old episodes of Poltergeist the Legacy lately, and I've come to some new realizations: At first I liked Rachel, but as the series went on her character bugged me more and more. I kind of understand why they even introduced the Kristin character, but not really. I didn't dislike her, but they didn't utilize her well and I never could really get behind her as a character. I just don't like Derek…there is something just a little too sketchy about him. Actually, the actor that portrays him was later on an episode of NCIS where he played a sketchy, adulterer, murderer combo, and he did it so well. I really do love Alex and Nick…and even though I know they never get together I still have shippy moments. My favorite episodes are the ones that focus on those two characters. Well minus the one where Nick's ex gets struck by lightening. What was the deal with only having part of the cast in each episode? One episode I watched today only had Nick and Al...

Things you would learn about me on a road trip

Image
Road trips are always interesting. They are also moments where the crazy we keep on the inside boils over a little. What would we learn about you on a road trip? Well for me... I sing when I drive Radio...no radio...I sing and drive. Basically being in a quiet car makes me and the fids nervous. It all started when I was learning how to drive. Being in a silent car made me a nervous wreck. I'm convinced the only reason I passed the test is because the test proctor talked to me the whole time. Now it is just habit, and for some reason my singing calms down the birds on road trips. I'd rather drive than be a passenger Maybe I'm just a control freak, but I cannot stand being a passenger for too long. Although, with my Blackberry and the ability to maybe catch a movie on my laptop will change this. Wow....aside from the Ohio trip with the fids I have not been on a good road trip in years. Basically, I get motion sickness so I can't read or write on a moving vehicle. Fal...

Lyrics Showdown #2 Two Points for Honesty by Guster

The Lyrics: If that's all you will be You'll be a waste of time You've dreamed a thousand dreams None seem to stick in your mind Two points for honesty It must make you sad to know that Nobody cares at all I wanna be where I've never been before I wanna be there and then I'd understand Know I'm right, and doing right Could I get to be like that How to know, but I don't know I've nothing more to gain Will I get better? Or stay the same? I found I always move too slowly Can't lift a finger, can't change my mind I never knew till someone told me that If that's all you will be You'll be a waste of time You've dreamed a thousand dreams None seem to stick in your mind Two points for honesty It must make you sad to know that Nobody cares at all And all the people who've seen it all before And all the people who already understand Know they're right, and done it right Could I get to be like that How to know, but I don't know It ge...

More Sprint Follies

My poor phone had one heck of a day today. I know it is just a phone…but now I am kind of starting to feel bad I will be putting it out to pasture tomorrow…or Wednesday if the office doesn't sign for it when UPS delivers. It isn't that my phone is old, bad, or unworthy. However, last week I made the commitment to make my writing my full time focus. Of course, I still have to keep my full time job for now. I'm lucky enough to have a decent job that usually doesn't suck, pays relatively well and has pretty good benefits. I will need that to keep the bills paid until I have enough work to make ends meet. Still, that also means I need a phone with more memory. I love my Blackberry Pearl, but memory is an issue. My Sprint contract was up in March, and after some stalking, Sprint backed down. I didn't want to use my upgrade and then be stuck with the Curve for two years. I know Sprint leaves a lot to be desired for most people. I agree that for the most part their custome...

Lyric Showdown #1 Either Way by Guster

The Lyrics: You were almost kind You were almost true Don't let me see That other side of you You have learned in time That you must be cruel I'll have to wait to get the best of you Poison in everything you say Don't you, don't you Wonder what difference does it make Either way... You were almost kind You were almost true Why give away that other side of you Happens every time So it must be true Step on a kid they'll grow up hating you Poison in everything you say Don't you, don't you Wonder what difference does it make Either way... Were you ever kind? Were you always cruel? Who's ever seen that other side of you? Happened every time So it must be true Where did you learn its either him or you? You were almost kind You were almost true Don't let me see that other side of you You have learned in time That you must be cruel I'll have to wait to get the best of you Poison in everything you say Don't you, don't you Wonder what difference ...

Emotionally Charged Songs

Image
Generally, songs do not make me cry. However, I have strong emotional attachments to certain songs. Either Way by Guster This isn't a big cry song, but I'm if I am in the right mood it can bring the tears. This is probably my favorite song of all time. It was that song that made me fall in love with the band. The lyrics are beautiful and haunting...I so love it. I guess they sort of remind me of me...especially the person I was at the time I heard the song and the person I have become in the past few years. Guster by So Long Again, this isn't a huge tear jerker, but the lyrics can get me if I am in a certain mindset. These lyrics remind me of the one relationship I honestly wish would have ended differently, but at the same time I have no regrets. The relationship was short, but it taught me what love really feels like. I can only hope to find that feelin...
