I really should know better

Tonight I was flipping channels looking for something to have in the background while I worked. Nothing was working for me, and then suddenly I saw it. My brain went to auto pilot and I hit enter. Here is the thing. I love the first installment of the Crow series. I think it is a great movie...actually the line "I get so lonely here by myself," makes me cry every single time. However, I think that every sequel and prequel they have put out after that has been awful. The only reason I own the second two is because it was cheaper to buy the box set then to just by the special edition DVD. I know that there is nothing remotely redeeming about this movie, yet if it is on I am compelled to watch it. This isn't the only movie that I have this problem with. I have the same issue with most bad sci fi movies...movies like "Deadly Swarm" seem to be more of a problem. "Queen of the Damned" is an awful movie. I that they took too long between making their first mo...

The Importance of a Strong Portfolio

If you are looking to impress potential clients and create a strong presence for your self online a strong and well put together portfolio is a must. You need to have something that looks good online and in print. It needs to emphasize your strong points , be direct and be easy to follow. It also should always be open to change. This may seem like common sense, but I know that sometime the portfolio is the last thing to be given attention. it makes sense to have a timely, clean and professional CV and Portfolio on you at all times. You never know when a new business venture is going to present itself. However, I know I fall short on this, and many others do too. We get so caught up in our current projects we fail to do the little things to help your business grow. This is one of my weaknesses, but it is one I am working to overcome. My old portfolio was beautiful. It looked great online and even better in print. The problem was that it was too long, and the information I included beca...

My favorite movie line has always been from "The Dark Crystal"

Image
The Dark Crystal has been my favorite movie since before I was five. I used to make my parents watch it every time it was on HBO. I loved the story and well it involves Muppets, so really what isn't to like. I have been impressed with and loved many movies since then, but The Dark Crystal has always remained my favorite. Jen: Wings? I don't have wings! Kira: Of course not. You're a boy. I love this line because as a child it was hilarious. Boys were gross and this was just another strike against them...the girl gelfings got the wings. I still love this line for sentimental reasons, and because it still makes me smile every time. The idea of Kira and her wings is one of those happy memories I will never forget.

Maybe my fame is still to come

Image
I don't think I have had my fifteen minutes of fame. I think my time is still coming. I don't want to assume the best of my life has past. My writing career is just beginning. I think that I have done some good things with it so far, but I really think the best is yet to come. I am still building my skills, getting needed feedback and gaining the experience I need I have a steadily growing blogging and article writing career. I write these daily, and I am happy to gain more knowledge each day. I have published two books. I am very proud of both. I also know as my writing progresses, I can write something better. My first novel is just that: my first attempt at fiction. I love the storyline and my characters. I really do think it is a good read, but I also see my first timer mistakes. I see the things I need to improve on and where I need to grow. I love my novella Running Away. It is a reflection of a dark time in my life. I started writing it while I was in my abusive relat...

Really, I'm a late comer to the internet world

Image
I did not start using the internet until 1997 when I went to college. Yes, I did not have an e-mail address until I was 18. My parents aren't exactly technically inclined. We didn't have a computer until my senior year of high school. My school did not get "modern" (and I use that term VERY loosely) computers until my junior year...I think. We didn't have internet access at school. Even with our new computer at home, my parents did not think internet access was needed. We bought a rebuilt PC for me to take to school. Almost as soon as it was connected to the network I was hooked. Our campus e-mail was on telnet. Yes, my first internet experience was with pine. Soon I was using telnet to get on IRC. Of course I took to the old chat rooms, and other primitive social sites pretty quickly. I even built a very sad looking web site using Angelfire (yes I know don't judge), and I managed to maintain it through college. The web site went unmaintained after I moved t...

Songs I would gladly erase from the hard drive

Image
There are many songs I wish I could expunge from my memory. There are even more I wish I could delete from every P3 Productions Hard Drive. They are songs I just dislike, I used to like but are overdone and songs that were okay until I heard them karaoked to death. What ever the reason is, I cannot stand these songs. Here are my top three. Love Shack by The B-52's Really this song was only a minor annoyance before I started working for a DJ/Karaoke business. I admit to singing along to it at dances and weddings...but those days are long gone. Now I associate Love Shack with drunk girls screaming into the microphone. Even girls who sing well tend to morph into tone deaf singers. Then there is the task of finding a guy who actually knows the song, AND is willing to get up there and sing with them. The inability to d this has even led to *me* singing the guy's part. I seriously think we should make an adjustment to our son...

Stuck in an elevator with My I-POD

Image
My I-POD I am not a fan of lots of people in really small places. If I have to handle it I will. Like if I am at work and there are tons of people in my shoebox sized office, I just deal with them one person at a time. I prefer to to go by the bubble concept. I like my personal space, and I am not a fan of people (especially people I don't know) invading my space. There is a long running joke with my friends: Rule #1: Don't touch Jenni. In a way it is true. I'm not a fan of people I do not know and trust in my space. Even if I know and trust you, I'm not all about being in close quarters. There have been nights in the DJ booth where I have had lots of anxiety. There were just too many people in the compact area. I liked all the people in the booth, but there just wasn't enough room. If I feel stuck or trapped, my anxiety goes up. Being stuck in elevator would already not be ideal. Yes it is annoying, and it is something that I know stresses me out. Having anothe...

No Internet Fool's Day Pranks For Me

Image
Honestly I have not had time to see any pranks online. I checked out the Guster site, but between the tour and the kids they didn't deliver their usual April Fools Day prank. The one prank I should have seen, I totally missed. Redgage (one of the social media sites I belong to) has a link at the top of their page that says it was bought by Microsoft for an undisclosed amount of money. They have a link for you to follow for more information. The link takes you to the bottom of the page where it tells you it was a joke. I was in a hurry when I uploaded pictures off my Blackberry and totally missed the link. Later I was looking at new content. Again, I missed the link. It wasn't until I reached the bottom of the page that I saw the April Fools message. Of course then I was confused. Eventually I found the link at the top of the page and it made sense. I heard Google had a nice one for Gmail users about having an application that responded to e-mails for you. I'm Gmail us...

We Need a Bigger Place

Image
I love my apartment. The location is perfect. There is shopping, grocery, pharmacy, restaurants, bands and the post office are withing walking distance. The rent is decent. Management takes good care of the property. I work full time downtown, but I work and my friends live in the north suburbs. My apartment is almost perfectly centered between the two. I love my furniture layout and the little touches that make it mine. Still, I sometimes wonder what it would be like if we had a little more room. We need more space. Okay I need more space. The birds really only roam in a small area. We have out grown our one bedroom apartment. Well we haven't out grown it as of now, but we are at that point. I need a place for family to and friends to stay while they are in town, I need more storage space. The biggest need is an office. Right now I am running a business from my love seat. It is super comfortable, but not ideal. I want a kitchen that is bigger than a glorified hallway. I want to...

If it is broken...I probably can't fix it

Image
I should not be allowed around tools. I'm okay with basic things. I can fix minor things, unclog a vacuum cleaner, assemble easy to assemble furniture (in that regards I am a step ahead of my mother...lets just say my computer desk assembly took much longer than it ever should have.). Outside of that I should not allowed to be build or install anything. If something major breaks, I will only make it worse. If you need someone to write a scholarly journal on the effects of violence in media...I'm your girl. If need a water heater fixed or a tree house built, let me no where near the scene.Let's just say I passed Industrial Arts in junior high only because the teacher felt sorry for me. I'm not saying that to be hard on myself...really you should have seen the atrocities I somewhat built. The only exception would be audio equipment. I can put that together, fix broken cords, and install sound systems. I can fix speakers and monitor the output on a soundboard like a p...

I prefer my news from a URL

Image
When I was in high school, I wanted to be a journalist. I had dreams of my work being in print an working my way up at one of the big newspapers. Now I am just shy of 30, and newspapers are on the endangered species list. I'm grateful to the Eastern Echo. Their negative press about the Marching Band (yes I know I'm lame...but the misinformation they printed made me mad),and the horribly insensitive article they wrote after one of our saxophone players died on his way to the Homecoming Game made me walk away from print news media. I had my employment card filled out, and I was all ready to work for them. I had even been by the office a few times to see if they had any stories I was interested in. Their biased and unprofessional article made me walk away. Instead I found new life in electronic media. Now, electronic media is how I prefer to get my news. I spend most of my day in front of a computer. When the TV is on, it is mainly for background noise. I have a few select sho...

Who I Am: The Movie Version

Image
We love the movies we love because we can internalize something from the movie. We "get" how a character is feeling. We sympathize or empathize with a situation. Sometimes though a character is us to a T. we can't escape how much they remind us of ourselves. For me it is Abby Barnes from The Truth About Cats and Dogs. Abby is sadly so me. She's smart, sarcastic and ambitious. She has put her career first, and she is very independent. Of course all those positives come with some negatives. Her sarcasm can sometimes lead to negativity. She has horrible self esteem. She doesn't believe she deserves the things she wants most. Her best friend is amazingly hot. This of course gets her in trouble. Yep that is me. Okay I wish I had the dream job, but I can't have it all. I'm smart and ambitious. If I don't give you your daily dose of sarcasm, I'll give you a 100% refund. I've pretty much put the idea of having anyone to take care of me out o...

How do you dress after the day job?

Image
I have to dress up every day. I hate it. I look forward to getting home and changing into my real clothes. Now what I change into is totally determined by what I am going to be doing that evening. If I am just staying home and blogging, I am all about being comfortable. I change into jeans and a t-shirt. If I am going to work from home, I might as well be comfortable. No one is going to see me, so I'm not a slave to fashion. If I am running errands, I may change into jeans and shoes. I want to be comfortable, but I still want to look nice. Maybe I have watched too many episodes of What Not to Wear, but I sort of what to be able to take pride in my appearance while in public. If I am working, then it depends on where I'm working and my mood. if the bar is very casual, they I am less apt to dress up. If it is a nicer place, I usually dress nicer than just a nice t-shirt. Then I usually break out the cute shirts and sweaters. Just around the house or running errands usually mean...

Could I really eat nothing but Sushi for a year?

Image
If I had to eat one type of cuisine for a year, I would be very torn. I am an adventurous eater. I'm all about trying new cuisine. It might not be my cup of tea, but at least I know I tried it. Because I love the variety, I can't settle on just one type of food. Lunch @ Dake Sushi by wEnDaLicious I am a HUGE fan of Chinese and Japanese food. I have at least one Chinese take out place in my cell phone and I am lucky enough to have a decent sushi place just down the the street from my house. Now, eating take out can get expensive. The good thing is that I love making it too. I'm a regular at Asia Mart and I am always trying new things. If I can't read the label, I'm not afraid to find an employee to help me. However, I also love Mexican food. Salsa and guacamole are two of my favorite things. I'm not as versed in Mexican cooking, but I am getting better. My fast food places of choice are Qdoba, Chipolte, and Moe's Southwestern grill. I'll skip the b...
